Notice period when cancelling
If you wish to cancel a Telkom contract, you will need to give a notice period of 30 days. It doesn’t matter whether you are still within the contract period or whether the contract has run it’s course. The notice period is mandatory.
We have previously written on what happens when a Telkom contract expires. We noted in that post that once your contract has run it’s course, it will roll-over on a month to month basis. That’s if you take no action to either renew or cancel it.
Can I return a device that I got on contract?
One thing that you will notice is that the device that you get on contract forms the largest part of the Telkom contract cancellation fee. So, wouldn’t it be possible to simply return the phone, laptop or any other gadget that you got on contract?
Unfortunately, that’s not possible. All operators in South Africa do not allow this, and Telkom is no exception. We have previously come across posts from people claiming gadgets can be returned within 7 days according to the law.
People cite the Consumer Protection Act here. However, that’s a misinterpretation. There are a limited amount of circumstances in which you are allowed to return an item, such as if you had made your purchase without first inspecting the device (why would you even do that?).
In any case, the Telkom contract cancellation fee is usually high because of the cost of the gadget. It would be a travesty to be able to return a phone or computer that you have used for months in any case.

To find out how much your cancellation penalty is going to be, you need to dial 081180 for mobile contracts and , 10210 for fixed line contracts.
