What are the Telkom mobile contract requirements? If you have been thinking about getting a contract with Telkom, then this is something that you will have been asking yourself. What documentation does Telkom require in order for people to take out contracts. That’s what we are going to answer here. It’s important to have everything on hand to ensure that you don’t end up being inconvenienced in one way or the other.
Documents required when applying for a Telkom mobile contract
The following are the document requirements for those looking to apply for Telkom mobile contracts;
- Your South African ID book. Foreign nationals living and working in South Africa can use their Passports.
- A bank statement going back 3 months.
- Proof of employment.
How does Telkom handle the process?
Those are the Telkom mobile contract requirements. But what happens after you have made your application? Does it mean if you have everything in order, your application will automatically be approved?
Well, that is not the case. There is a process that’s taken following your application for a Telkom contract. Telkom makes a few checks to ensure that you qualify.
First, they make a credit check. Our research indicates that Telkom uses mainly Credit Expert and TransUnion for their credit checks. If your credit rating is not good enough, they will reject your contract application.
Telkom also checks that you are really employed where you claim to be employed. That’s a sensible enough step. This is South Africa, after all, and it would be easy for someone to claim to be who they are not and to work where they do not work. So, these checks are really necessary.
Do foreign nationals qualify?
Yes, foreign nationals who have been living and working legally in South Africa qualify to take out Telkom mobile contracts. There are probably millions of foreigners in the country at the moment.
Many of these people have permission to work in the country. Some are permanent residents. Others have permits allowing them to work legally.
If you are one of these people, then the Telkom mobile contract requirements given here apply to you. But instead of using a South African ID, you can use your passport when taking out your contract.
Summary
Those are the Telkom mobile contract requirements. Now you know what’s required in order for you to get a contract with Telkom mobile.
In terms of what’s on offer, Telkom offers a wide range of cellphone, data and airtime deals. Taking a contract has the advantage that you get cheaper rates.
You also get gadgets that would otherwise have been out of your reach. So, instead of saving up money to buy that cellphone that you have been drooling about for so long, you can get it now and pay a little bit per month.
We all know that saving money is difficult. Anyway, you can post any questions that you may have on our Forum. You can also leave comments below if you have something to add.

if im a student and have no proof of employment but have a bursary will i be able to get a laptop contract
Hmmm, how will you pay for the laptop? Through the bursary? If yes, the answer is “probably.” You can only know after you have approached Telkom. Please keep us informed on your success or otherwise
Hey there I’m a pensioner I want to take out a contract for a phone I do get money every month so will I qualify for it
You will probably get one but the one that you will get will depend on the amount that you get per month, as is the case with everyone else. I don’t think there is any law or anything preventing pensioners from getting phones on contract. Just approach your nearest Telkom store or chat with them on Twitter or Facebook for further help.
Is it possible to take two different contract cellphone deals at the same time
Yes it’s very possible. You do need to have a good credit score however, and you should be able to afford both contracts.
I would like to know if it is possible to get 2 contract phone deals which are different
As noted from the earlier answer, the only thing that will stop you from getting as many contracts as you wish is you income and your credit rating. We have come across people who took a contract for themselves and another for their wife on Telkom. Others have contracts on MTN and another contract on Telkom. So, as long as your credit score and salary are good, you should have no issue.
