We have researched and it appears there are gaps in the information that’s available out there. How to change DSTV payment date
The following is how to change your payment date on DSTV;
- First, you need to get in touch with DSTV to tell them that you wish to change your payment date. You can do so on Twitter or on Facebook. Look for the handle that corresponds with your country.
- They will calculate the pro-rata amount that you will need to pay in order to make the switch. This amounts depends on the number of days between your original payment date and the date that you have chosen to be your new payment date.
- On your original payment date, you will have to pay the pro-rata amount. That’s the amount that you need to continue watching DSTV for the number of days remaining till you arrive at your new payment date.
- Another payment will become due on your new payment date. That’s the full amount for your subscription going forward. Note that you can pay both the pro-rata amount and your subscription amount on your original payment date.
- The DSTV pro-rata amount is calculated using the formula; cost of your package / 30 * number of days to your new payment date.
DSTV explains the pro-rata amount
A lot of people get confused over the issue of the pro-rata amount. What is the pro-rata amount with regards to DSTV payments? How does it apply when you want to change your DSTV payment date? How is it calculated? We asked DSTV and they gave us the following explanation;
Let’s explain pro rata. Pro rata is a form of billing that basically means we bill you for what you have used or bill you on what you want to use moving forward. For example, if a DStv package is R2.50 a day, we bill you that amount for 1 day. 2 days would be R5.00. 3 days would R7.50, whilst 4 days would be R10.00 and so on and so forth. It is better this way because, we will be billing you for what you want to use, for the number for days. This primarily matters regarding Holiday Home, reconnection of services, which we charge a R50.00 reconnection fee and change of payment dates. We do this for change of payment dates because it would be inconsistent for example for a customer to request change closer to payment date or changing every week, including every month. This after watching for number of days, this therefore, would affect billing cycle. Hence, we say a customer can change a payment date but a customer will, more likely than not, be required to pay a pro-rata amount dependent on the date you choose. This pro-rata amount will be due on your original payment date. This to keep billing consistent and also calculatable.

Further explanation
Just to clarify things a bit further, the pro-rata amount is for the number of days between your original payment date and your new payment date. To use an example from Twitter, a lady was complaining that she was charged a pro-rata of R150 when changing her payment date from the 25th to the end of the month. She could not understand why she needed to pay the original R150. Her monthly subscription was R896.
The explanation is that there are 5 days from the 25th to the end of the month, which is the 30th. Now we can use the formula given above to calculate her pro-rata. That would be R896 divided by 30 times 5. That gives R149 which is rounded up to R150. That’s the amount that she will have to pay. In other words, she is pays R30 per day for her DSTV subscription. So, for the 5 days remaining till her new payment date, she needs to pay R150.
Should she not pay this amount, her subscription would lapse on the original payment date. She can then make a payment on the new date and she will be good to do. So, the pro-rata is to ensure that you continue watching for the days between the new date and the old date.
